Liberty's Civil Defense rounds are designed to achieve more stopping power (kinetic energy) and terminal effect (wound cavity/lethality) than any other handgun round. A personal defense round, the Civil Defense line is lead-free and uses a monolithic nickel-plated copper fragmenting projectile with a deep cavity hollow point in a nickel-plated (brass) cartridge case. Civil Defense travels at approximately twice the speed of traditional lead based ammunition and delivers 30 to 40% more kinetic energy transfer than other leading ammunition. The 50 GR, 380 Auto Civil Defense round generates velocities in excess of 1500 FPS with more than 250 FPE of kinetic energy.

Let me say up front, I like the Civil Defense rounds in general. I know there are a lot of people who have issues with its penetration, but I think the amount of damage the round can do makes up for it. That said, the .380 rounds are the only ones I'm hesitant to recommend. The issue comes down to use case: Normally, you're carrying a .380 for concealability and that generally means a smaller pistol. That shorter barrel is the problem. I had heard before that the high-speed rounds had issues with shorter barrels, but until I was doing some testing of my own, I had never seen it. In my 3.1"-barrel pistol, the accuracy drops off to what I consider unacceptable levels once you get out to between 7 and 10 yards, maybe a little less. (By unacceptable I mean that my chances of completely missing my target go way up. You aren't going to have time to take careful aim if someone is threatening your life.) Now, with a longer barrel, this may not be an issue, so keep that in mind when purchasing, and as most people will tell you, most self-defense situations happen at 3-7 yards (the FBI says 7-10) so it may not be an issue at all, but I just don't feel overly comfortable using this round for EDC. Their higher caliber rounds? I'll recommend those without hesitation.
