Springfield ARmory TRP 1911 45 ACP 5in Barrel 8+1(3) Night Sights FDE

I purchased the coyote brown TRP last week, after months of research.  I would consider myself very experienced with firearms.  The gun was properly cleaned and lubricated prior to first use and at least every 250 rounds after that (after each range visit).  I have around 750 rounds through the gun at this point, so it should really be "broken in."

PROS:

- When it's working, the gun shoots great!  Everything you want in a 1911.  Crisp trigger, grips that keep the pistol locked in place during recoil.  Kept the pistol from getting a one-star review.

- Excellent fit, with no play between the slide and frame

- Attractive finish and grips.  It's a good-looking gun

- Solid purchasing experience and great price through Range USA, as usual.  Finally caught this on sale after watching for months.

CONS:

- Failures to extract, beginning after roughly 40 rounds and then every 2-3 magazines after that.  Three different ammo types (all from good manufacturers...230 gr FMJ, 230 gr hollow point, 220 gr +P hollow points), four different types of magazines (factory, three different variants of 47D mags...the industry standard).  I own around 20 magazines for 1911s, and kept track of malfunctions.  It happened with multiple magazines of all types and could not be pinned down to a single bad mag.

- Failures to feed, every 2-3 magazines with one ammo type (the most popular defensive ammo)

- Two-piece full length guide rod that loosens over the course of a single range visit.  Easy to imagine searching for this in the dirt at an outdoor range during a pistol class...

- Finish looks good but scratches very easily (see below)

- Shipped without instruction manual.  Downloaded the 1911 .pdf from their website, and all TRP info is for their older model with completely different disassembly and reassembly procedures from the new model.  Scratched the finish reassembling the gun after lubricating it for its first range trip.

- I am writing this review instead of enjoying the pistol I bought last week

So far no response from the manufacturer's warranty department, despite two emails.  It's possible that they will get this firearm in working condition, but even if fixed, I will never trust this firearm with my life.  I realize it's a 1911 and not a modern polymer pistol, but a well-lubricated 1911 should be on par with the best that Austria and Germany have to offer over the course of a single range trip...

If you can't trust a duty pistol, it has no place in your collection.  If a pistol won't run ball ammo OR hollow points from multiple top manufacturers, it has no place in your collection.  I wouldn't even sell this TRP to somebody else at this point, as I hate the thought of another person experiencing this level of disappointment.

Any company that allows their flagship pistol out the door of their factory in this condition does not deserve your business.
