Putting a Magpul Drum into say a Ruger PC with a standard stock, gives no doubt it does NOT look anything like an “assault weapon”. :-)
To start with, the drum performed flawlessly, and is of quality expected of Magpul. While it would have been nice to have it function in both a PC, and a Glock, which the shorter PCC column height will not fit into any Glock, it does allow prone position when using a PC, with a Magpul Bipod. In the manual it is also suggested when using a Magpul Drum in a Glock, the magazine release should be upgraded to a metal one, which PCs already have.
Loading it, be sure and read the manual, and watch the video. It isn’t too bad until the last 5-10 rounds, where the manual says to ratchet again. Well the ratchet doesn’t work that way, as ratcheting again, is like playing Yo-Yo, so the trick is ratchet it once, then hold the top round down while ratcheting the second time, then there will be room for another round to drop in. Basically the 5-10 takes about as long to load as the first 40, and while it is worth it, it is hard on the thumb.
The best position I have found to load one is to rest the bottom on my six-pack holding it with my left hand, using the left thumb to work the lever, and using the palm of the right hand to prevent the whole magazine from rotating while ratcheting, then drop a round in, and repeat.
Did I mention how awesome it looks when installed?
